2024 NBA free agency

Jayson Tatum, Celtics agree to richest contract in league history

Klay to Mavs, George to 76ers

Barely two week after bagging the NBA championship – a record breaking 18, the Boston Celtics rewarded its star player, Jason Tatum with the richest contract in league history – a supermax contract extension worth $315 million for five years.

The deal supersedes the five-year, $304 million contract Tatum’s teammate Jaylen Brown signed last season making the Celtics the owner of the two biggest contract in NBA.

Another key player, Derrick White, reportedly a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension. According to ESPN, the contract includes a player option. The deal will begin during the 2025-26 season because White still has one more year left on his current contract.

Meanwhile, Celtic’s Conference rival, the Philadelphia 76ers landed the biggest fish of free agency, signing former L.A. Clippers star Paul George to a reported four-year $212 million contract, giving the Sixers its own version of a Big Three.

Losing NBA finalist Dallas Mavericks also reportedly landed former GSW Warriors star –Klay Thompson in a sign and trade, giving the other half of the Splash Brothers to a three year $50 million contract. The Mavericks sent two second-round draft picks, one in 2025 and another in 2031, to Golden State as part of the deal.

While the Sixers and the Mavs have strengthened their respective line-ups, NBA analysts they still cannot topple the reigning NBA champions next season.
