Over 2,300 voters in Tupi, South Cotabato have voted to create another barangay in the municipality during the plebiscite held on Saturday, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
In a statement released late Saturday evening, the poll body announced that out of the 2,485 voters who participated, a total of 2,393 or 96.30 percent voted "Yes" to ratify the creation of Barangay Juan-Loreto Tamayo.
On the other hand, only 89 voters or 3.58 percent voted "No".
The Comelec added that the overall voter turnout was at 25.45 percent.
The barangays, namely, Cebuano, Linan, and Miasong that have participated, have a total of 9,765 registered voters.
Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia, together with senior officials and concerned field officials in Tupi town closely monitored the situation on the ground prior to and on the day of the plebiscite.
The poll body extended its gratitude to all partner agencies which made the conduct of the activity orderly, peaceful and secure, namely the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), with the full support of the concerned local government unit.
