BACOLOD CITY—The city government, led by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, broke ground on Tuesday for the P12.5-million athletes' dormitory inside the Romanito P. Maravilla Sr. National High School, home to the city's track and field champions.
"The athletes that bring honor to the city and bring home recognition when they compete abroad should be given decent living quarters," Benitez said.
The facility, which will be built in Barangay Estefania and funded by the city's Special Education Fund, will support the training and development of the athletes. The dormitory, which will accommodate 32 student-athletes with separate quarters for boys and girls, will also feature an office and a dining area. It is expected to be completed within 180 calendar days.
Among the school's notable champions are Mico Villaran, a multi-medalled athlete in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa, who won gold in the 400m hurdles, 110m hurdles, and 4x100m relay, and Airex Gabriel Villanueva, now part of the Ateneo de Manila University athletics team, who secured gold in discus throw and shotput in the 2024 National Open Championships and holds the 2023 Palarong Pambansa record in discus throw.
"We are very proud of our athletes because we performed well in local and international competitions. We want to give them proper recognition and support for their training and development," Benitez added. (PNA)
