BIR to go after 'billionaire' flaunting on social media

When you have it, maybe you don't have to flaunt it.

Top taxman Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said his agency would go after an online beauty products skincare entrepreneur who flexed her billions of pesos in earnings from e-commerce sales.

"They're flexing on social media that they are earning billions, but they're not paying taxes," Lumagui said at the sidelines of the BIR's 120th anniversary celebration in Pasay City.

He warned that the BIR would file a tax violation complaint against the entrepreneur.

Lumagui added that the BIR recently raided the warehouses of the unidentified entrepreneur and found that these facilities were not registered.

"Three of their warehouses are unregistered," Lumagui said, adding that the BIR has already subpoenaed the individual. "We are seeing so many unregistered warehouses where these big online sellers keep their products."

Recently, Brilliant Skincare CEO Miss Glenda trended on Tiktok after she was interviewed showing her "go-to place" in Baguio to relax. She claimed she acquired the property after becoming a billionaire at age 21 from selling beauty and skincare products online.

"Let's pay our taxes, let's register, and let's show that we are also helping our country by paying taxes because many businesses pay taxes," Lumagui appealed to entrepreneurs.

In a bid to capture the growing e-commerce space, the BIR now requires merchants or sellers in online platforms to pay withholding tax, effective on July 15, 2024
