MANILA – Visitors who fail to follow the proper dress code will not be allowed entry into the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu (BMSN) in Cebu City starting Oct. 1.
In a public advisory Sunday, the Augustinian Friars of the Basilica Community said a dress code policy for those who will visit and hear Masses will be implemented in a commitment to uphold the sanctity of and reverence to the Basilica.
“This measure aims to ensure that all visitors --pilgrims, Mass-goers, or tourists -- demonstrate the appropriate respect for this sacred space. Effective Oct. 1, 2024, the Basilica will no longer provide shawls for all visitors,” it said.
“To maintain the solemnity of our worship space, those arriving in attire deemed unsuitable for worship or who attempt to wear shawls rented outside the Basilica will be denied entry.”
The Augustinian friars said those who are only visiting the Basilica during weekends have been advised not to do so unless they will attend Eucharistic celebrations.
“Moreover, tourists are discouraged to visit the Basilica on Fridays and Sundays unless they intend to participate in the liturgical services,” it said.
The implementation of the dress code policy is part of a broader effort to align with practices observed at other churches and shrines, both locally and internationally, it added. (PNA)
