The Philippines is emerging as a significant player in the health and wellness tourism industry, highlighted by the launch of the International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress (IHWTC) at the Grand Hyatt Manila, Taguig City. Spearheaded by Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, this event positions the Philippines as a premier wellness destination in the Asia-Pacific region.
Key attendees, including Philippine First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos, Agora Group CEO Hadi Malaeb, and Taguig City Mayor Laarni Lopez Cayetano, emphasized the country’s unique combination of advanced healthcare, compassionate Filipino care (malasakit), and deeply rooted wellness traditions, particularly the hilot massage, known for its healing properties.
The congress, themed "Aruga" (Filipino for care and nurture), showcases how the Philippines blends traditional practices with cutting-edge medical services. It also highlights the government’s commitment, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to improving healthcare infrastructure and promoting tourism through initiatives like the Lab for All program. The congress featured delegates from over 40 countries and a range of exhibitors, including wellness spas, hospitals, and regional tourism offices.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) partnered with the Department of Health and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) to further boost medical and wellness tourism. Initiatives such as tourist first aid facilities in key destinations and a Medical Tourism Concierge service at airports aim to streamline the experience for international visitors seeking health and wellness in the country.
The event underscores the potential for the Philippines to become a global health and wellness hub, leveraging its highly skilled healthcare professionals, competitive pricing, and the country’s natural beauty.
