Green Spikers, Altas triumph in Men’s Collegiate Challenge

De La Salle University relied on Joshua Magalaman to beat Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21, in the V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge at the Paco Arena in Manila on Wednesday.

Magalaman scored 13 points on 10 attacks and three blocks as the Green Spikers extended their winning streak to three and stay on top of the standings.

The Generals, on the other hand, took their third straight loss.

“Pwede kong sabihing convincing kasi straight sets pero since medyo nagpapalit ako ng players, somehow nakikita ko na rin yung kung anong pwede pang i-adjust at the same time ano yung kailangan pa namin ipakita na talagang walang kaduda-duda (I can say it's convincing because straight sets but since I'm changing players, somehow I can see what can still be adjusted, at the same time, what else can we show without doubt)," said La Salle head coach Jose Roque after the one hour and 22-minute match.

Ruther Abor had a block kill and an ace to put EAC at 22-24 in the second set. But his service error allowed La Salle to take a 2-0 set lead.

Chris Hernandez chipped in 10 points while MJ Fortuna had seven points for the Green Spikers, who will face the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Abor finished with 15 points on 13 spikes, a block, and an ace for EAC, which will try to barge into the win column next Wednesday against Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

Meanwhile, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta rallied past Far Eastern University, 23-25, 15-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-6, in the other game.

The Altas fought back in the deciding set, taking a 10-1 lead behind Kobe Tabuga and KC Andrade to wrap up the match in two hours and 13 minutes.

Perpetual tied FEU and idle National University at 2-1.

“Sabi ko sa kanila, ang skills nandiyan, the problem is yung emotion natin, yung confidence nyo sa sarili nyo, so dapat ibalik yung confidence. Tingnan mo magbabago yan kapag nakakuha tayo ng isang set, tataas ang confidence natin (I told them, the skills are there, the problem is our emotion, your self-confidence, so you should get back the confidence. Just see, it will change if we get one set, our confidence will increase)," commented Altas coach Sammy Acaylar.

Jefferson Marapoc led the Altas with 19 points, 13 receptions, and eight digs.

Tabuga contributed 14 points, including four blocks, while Andrade and Jester Bornel produced 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Dryx Saavedra led FEU with 14 points, while Doula Ndongala and Amet Bituin each scored 10 points. (PNA)
