House marks Elderly Filipino, HREP months

The House of Representatives (HRep) celebrated the contributions of senior citizens to nation-building during its flag raising ceremony on Monday to mark the Elderly Filipino Month.

Guest speaker Rep. Rodolfo “Ompong” Ordanes of the Senior Citizens Partylist said “Our elderly have spent decades building our communities and supporting the development of our country. It is our sheer duty as lawmakers and staff to keep pushing for policies that protect the welfare of our senior citizens.”

According to Ordanes, this is the reason the Senior Citizens Partylist has been at the forefront of measures, such as the Universal Social Pension, Senior Citizens Act, Geriatric Health Act, Early Voting Act, among others, that aim to provide healthcare, financial security, as well as social protection to the elderly, ensuring they live their longer years with respect and dignity.

“Our work is far from over, and I urge all my esteemed colleagues to keep supporting and advancing the measures that will truly improve the lives of our elderly,” Ordanes said.

He also highlighted that October is also the HRep Month, and 2024 is the 117th anniversary of the chamber, an opportunity to reflect on the vital role of the institution in the life of every Filipino.

Ordanes said the House is composed of dedicated people from the secretariat and congressional offices who keep the legislative process running smoothly from drafting bills and authorizing hearings, to managing information, as well as handling administrative, finance, legal, and other essential tasks.

“Our Secretariat and congressional staff work tirelessly behind the scene to ensure everything is done seamlessly. I extend my deepest gratitude to all of you and everyone who keep this chamber running. Your commitment and dedication is the foundation of our success. Without you, we cannot fulfill our mandate to serve the Filipino people,” Ordanes said.

He urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to improving the efficiency, transparency and effectiveness of the legislative process.

“Let us build on the collective efforts of everyone, and work towards creating laws truly responsive to the needs of the people. Let us draw inspiration from the wisdom of our elderly and the tireless efforts of our staff. May we always remember the value of service and dedication as we continue (doing) our role,” he said.

Both the Senior Citizens’ Partylist and the House Committee on Senior Citizens hosted Monday’s flag raising activity.
