On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Embassy of France in the Philippines launched the "Blue Nations" initiative, a comprehensive program preparing for the United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC3) in Nice in June 2025. It aims to enhance political, scientific, and civic engagement in the fields of environmental protection, climate action, blue economy, and maritime security.
The event took place in the presence of Secretary Antonia Loyzaga, Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Senator Loren Legarda, Undersecretary Jesus Domingo, representing Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo, representatives from the Climate Change Commission, other representatives of the Philippines government and agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, and civil society.
The Blue Nations initiative reflects the shared commitment of France and the Philippines, strong advocates for climate and ocean protection, since the Manila call to action on climate change (February 2015), which led to the Paris Agreement (COP 21). The initiative seeks to build on the longstanding cooperation between France and the Philippines on maritime and climate issues. It is designed to amplify efforts in these critical areas in the lead-up to the 2025 UNOC in Nice.
Simultaneously, the Embassy of France launched a call for proposals on the 'Youth and Oceans' project, a pivotal initiative aimed at galvanizing civil society, students, and youth to raise awareness about the pressing climate change challenges. The selected projects, to be funded over a span of two years, will play a crucial role in this endeavor.
