Amidst the pressing global environmental challenges, Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has once again demonstrated its leadership in sustainable aviation. From earning Level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation, MCIA has now been honored with the prestigious Platinum Green Airport Award 2024 from the Airports Council International (ACI), making it the first airport in the Philippines to achieve this dual distinction.

As the operator of MCIA, Aboitiz GMCAC (AGMCAC) has implemented a range of innovative projects that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives, which are integral to our commitment to safe and sustainable airport operations, include the implementation of stringent environmental policies and the use of cutting-edge technology such as solar PV systems. These measures have significantly reduced our carbon emissions and helped us maintain our green spaces.

MCIA is among the 12 exceptional airports across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions recognized for their groundbreaking sustainability efforts. The award was presented during the ACI World Annual General Assembly, Conference, and Exhibition (WAGA 2024) held from May 21-23.

In the 8-15 million passenger airport category, MCIA outperformed Saudi Arabia's King Fahd International Airport (Gold) and Japan's Chubu Centrair International Airport (Silver).

The Green Airports Recognition aims to champion environmental best practices that reduce aviation's environmental impact and acknowledge airports that excel in their ecological endeavors.

"2.5% of global carbon emissions are coming from the aviation industry. Being the second largest airport facility in the country, our role is crucial in minimizing our carbon footprint. We do this by setting operational boundaries that would directly impact the CO₂ levels of the airport," said Aboitiz GMCAC (AGMCAC) Chief Executive Officer Athanasios Titonis.

As the proud recipient of the country’s first green airport award, we extend our gratitude to the dedicated teams who work tirelessly to uphold globally sustainable standards at MCIA. We also call upon our valued passengers and stakeholders to join us in our journey towards making MCIA an even more environment-friendly airport. Your support is crucial in our collective efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and preserve our planet for future generations.
