The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Saturday assured the public of the government’s preparations for La Niña.
Emmanuel Miro, MMDA head for Special Events told a news forum in Quezon City that the agency is continuously clearing waterways in the metropolis.
“In preparation sa La Niña, ongoing naman. Continuous po tayo, iyong ating flood control office na nagki-clear ng ating mga canals, esteros at iba pang mga waterways,” Miro explained.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued a La Niña Alert on Friday.
PAGASA suggested 70 percent chance of La Niña forming in August to October. The weather phenomenon is likely to persist until the first quarter of 2025, it said.
“With this development, the DOST (Department of Science and Technology)-PAGASA ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Alert and Warning System is now raised to La Niña Alert,” PAGASA declared.
The state weather bureau said the country may experience a higher chance of increased convective activity and tropical cyclone occurrence, which may bring above normal rainfall over some parts of the country in the coming months.
It further said potential adverse impacts may include floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. assured the government is doing the necessary preparations for the looming La Niña.
Government agencies — the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) – have started preparing ahead of La Niña.
The DA will employ different interventions such as water management and distribution of flood-tolerant rice varieties.
The DOE, on the other hand, has started preparations to avoid damage of transmission lines.
