Mobile users pushing rise in digital consumption

The rise of the digital consumer is one of the most significant trends of the 21st century. As technology has become more and more ubiquitous, consumers have come to expect a seamless and digital experience across all aspects of their lives.

Digital consumption continues to soar, with the average mobile data consumption per user jumping 24% to an average of 15.6 GB per month in the first quarter of the year, Globe data showed. The same data added an uptrend in demand for mobile data, logging 61,610 petabytes of mobile data traffic in the same period, a 19% increase from last year at 1,352.

This increase indicates consumers' growing engagement with and reliance on mobile data as digital content consumption and online activities continue to rise.

"Our commitment to enhancing our network capabilities and expanding our services to meet the evolving needs of our customers is evident in these results. As mobile data becomes a more predominant part of our revenue stream, we are more determined than ever to invest in state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure to provide our customers with an unparalleled digital experience," said Darius Delgado, head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business.

The data mirrors an independent report by the data and analytics platform DoubleVerify showing that global digital content consumption is also on the rise.

"The motivation for consuming content varies significantly by age," the report, Four Fundamental Shifts in Advertising and Media, stated. "Younger consumers are the most likely to prioritize entertainment, while older consumers see content as a way to stay informed about current affairs."

Revenue rise

According to Globe, the rise in digital consumption saw the company's mobile data revenues expanding by 10% in the first three months of the year, reaching P 23.8 billion, up from P1.7 billion in the same period last year.

Globe said this significant growth is primarily propelled by the widespread adoption of smartphones and the burgeoning popularity of data-intensive applications.

As digital platforms become increasingly embedded in consumers' daily lives, mobile data usage has grown exponentially. Mobile data now accounts for 82% of Globe's total mobile revenues, up from 80% last year.

In contrast, traditional mobile services such as voice and SMS have seen slight 2% and 3% decline year-on-year, respectively, with revenues dipping to P3.4 billion and P1.9 billion. This shift underscores a broader trend in consumer preference toward data-driven communication over conventional voice calls and text messaging.

On a sequential basis, mobile data revenues remained stable against the fourth quarter of 2023, which is typically a strong period for data consumption due to the holiday season. This demonstrates the strong, sustained demand for mobile internet services among Filipinos.

Globe continues to cater to the digital lifestyle of Filipinos, who are increasingly turning to mobile solutions for their communication, entertainment, and shopping needs. The company remains focused on bolstering its mobile data services and maintaining its leadership in a highly competitive market.
