Riverside communities in Barangay Tubuli, Paluan, Occidental Mindoro are now protected from the adverse effects of flooding following the construction of a structure along the Apnikan River by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), completed months ahead of its schedule.
Implemented by the DPWH Mindoro Occidental District Engineering Office, the project involves the construction of a 431-linear meter concrete revetment wall with steel sheet piles reinforcing the riverbank’s capacity against heavy and persistent flooding, causing bank erosions and water overflow to nearby communities.
Based on the report of DPWH Regional Office IV-B Director Gerald A. Pacanan to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, the completed project is one of the numerous disaster mitigation measures that the Department has established in Occidental Mindoro, fostering a more comprehensive and effective flood control plan in the region.
“Before the completion of this project, frequent flooding in the Apnikan River and its adjacent Tubili River severely affects agricultural land, livestock, properties, and the livelihood activities of the residents in Barangay Tubili,” added Director Pacanan.
Costing P96.4 Million, the flood control structure is funded through the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2024.
