As part of its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in 2030, the Quezon City government has procured eight electric buses to complement its fleet of QCity Buses.
Modern electric buses have a 41-seat capacity and ample space to accommodate standing passengers. They are also equipped with wheelchair ramps to support the mobility of persons with disabilities.
Each unit includes handrails, fire suppression and emergency equipment, CCTV cameras, and smart televisions to ensure passengers' safety.
The project is being implemented per Republic Act No. 11697, or the “Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act or EVIDA Law.” This law states that at least 5% of government fleets, owned or leased, shall comprise electric vehicles.
The electrification of the city’s service vehicles is meant to reduce dependence on the conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), contributing up to 25% of black carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
Mayor Joy Belmonte vowed that QC will stay committed to pioneering sustainable practices.
“We are excited to roll out these electric buses as part of our city’s dedication to implementing programs and policies that promote environmental sustainability. We are determined to take charge in instituting climate action such as transitioning to alternative energy sources,” the mayor said.
Likewise, This initiative aligns with the Enhanced Local Climate Change Action Plan of Quezon City 2021-2050. Earlier in 2024, the QC government installed solar panels on three of its buildings in the city hall complex. It plans to add more solar panels in city-owned buildings, schools and hospitals to pursue its commitment to clean and renewable energy.
