The Office of the President (OP) proudly honored the Filipino athletes who competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics with a grand celebration titled ‘Pagbibigay Dangal: A Heroes’ Welcome Celebration for the Philippines’ Paris 2024 Olympians.’ The event featured a 7.7-kilometer parade that began at Aliw Theater in Pasay City and culminated at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in the City of Manila on August 14, 2024.
The parade, which showcased 17 of the country’s finest athletes, passed by iconic landmarks including Roxas Boulevard and Padre Burgos Avenue en route to Taft Avenue, before continuing to President Quirino Avenue and concluding at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. The coliseum served as the venue for a viewing party that featured live performances from various artists, adding to the festive atmosphere.
During the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Philippines sent 22 athletes to compete in nine sports, achieving remarkable success with two gold medals and two bronze medals, securing the country’s 37th place in the overall medal tally.
Yesterday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hosted a welcome reception at Malacañan Palace to honor the 22 athletes. In a ceremony filled with pride and gratitude, the President awarded a total of PhP50 million in cash, along with Presidential Medals of Merit and Presidential Citations.
Carlos Yulo, who brought home two Olympic gold medals, received PhP20 million and a Presidential Medal of Merit. Bronze medalists Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio were each awarded PhP2 million, while the remaining Olympians received PhP1 million each.
Additionally, the coaches of the Olympians were recognized with PhP500,000 each. These awards are in addition to the financial incentives provided under the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.
The celebration not only honored the athletes’ achievements but also highlighted the nation’s pride and support for its sports heroes. The grand parade and festivities served as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Filipino Olympians, inspiring future generations to strive for excellence in sports.
