In the wake of the consecutive fires that occurred in the city, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna yesterday called on village officials in the city to boost their information dissemination efforts on fire prevention.

During the distribution of aid to fire victims in Tondo district, Lacuna emphasized residents should be properly informed on the causes of fire and how they can prevent these from happening.

In the recent spate of fires to hit the district, around 203 families were left homeless. Each family received P10,000 while seven unattached individuals got PHP3,000.

While acknowledging the financial aid to be a mere token, Lacuna said this is the city government's way of helping them start again.

From June 13 to 24, seven fires occurred in the city, Lacuna said.

The latest fire happened on June 23 which gutted a residential area on Rivera St. in the city's Barangay 234.

The number includes five incidents in Tondo and one each in the city's second and fourth districts.

The amount of assistance distributed to the fire victims topped PHP2 million.
