Lifting eight million Filipinos from poverty by 2028 is doable, an official of the Department of Finance (DOF) assured on Saturday.
In a news forum in Quezon City, DOF Undersecretary Domini Velasquez said she is bullish about the Philippines becoming an “upper middle-income country” like Indonesia by next year.
“So, actually, mag-i-increase ng mga aalisin natin sa mahihirap – mga eight million mga kailangan natin, eight million alisin by 2028. Doable naman iyon,” DOF Undersecretary Domini Velasquez explained.
Every Filipino deserves a better life, Velasquez stressed. “Dapat araw-araw may nakakatikim na parang nag-i-improve iyong buhay natin ‘di ba. So, kumbaga ang gusto natin iyong mga tao talaga natitikman iyon.”
Velasquez said the Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 6.3 percent in the second quarter, up from 5.8 percent.
Unemployment is also 3.1 percent, lower than the 5.1 percent during the pre-pandemic period, she said.
Velasquez said the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is on track to bring down the poverty rate to single digits by 2028. PND
