German Berterame and Sergio Canales scored either side of halftime as Monterrey rose to Mexico's Liga MX summit on Friday with a 2-1 away win over Puebla.
The visitors went ahead just after the half hour when Canales' long-range effort rebounded off the bar and into the path of Berterame, who slotted home from close range.
Former Real Madrid and Spain international attacker Canales doubled the advantage by sending a 25-yard rocket into the top left corner.
Santiago Ormeno reduced the deficit nine minutes from time but Los Rayados held on to secure their fourth win from five games so far in the Apertura season.
The result leaves Monterrey two points clear of second-placed Cruz Azul, who have a game in hand. Puebla are 13th in the 18-team standings, with just one win so far this campaign.
