A 29-year-old woman reported a disturbing incident where she claims she was publicly shamed and forced off a public utility vehicle (PUV) by its driver last Friday, June 7, 2024.
In a viral video posted in social media, Joy Gutierrez alleges that the driver cited her body size as the reason for her expulsion, despite her offering to pay double the fare.
She also said that the driver accused her of being on board during the vehicle's last flat tire incident.
In response to Gutierrez's complaint, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced their intention to issue a show cause order to both the driver and the operator of the jeepney.
The driver could potentially face violations of the franchise's terms and conditions, including unjust discrimination, lack of courtesy and overcharging.
Gutierrez recounted that the driver allegedly targeted her due to her weight.
According to her, the driver's spouse intervened, claiming they didn't want overweight passengers on board, which led to Gutierrez being asked to leave the vehicle.
Despite initially refusing and receiving support from other passengers, Gutierrez ultimately felt compelled to disembark due to persistent verbal abuse from the driver and his spouse.
The incident has sparked public outcry and renewed calls for action against discrimination in public transportation.
The LTFRB assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter and pledged to take appropriate measures to address any violations of passenger rights.
