MMDA, local DRMMOs convene MMDRRMC for disaster readiness

A 2nd Quarter Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) convened on Thursday to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing readiness and response amid various calamities affecting the National Capital Region (NCR).

  Chaired by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Deputy Chairman Undersecretary Frisco San Juan Jr., with participation from local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRMMOs) from Metro Manila and member-agencies, the assembly focused on their preparedness for various calamities.

  San Juan emphasized the importance of the conference in coordinating preparations among agencies and local governments, particularly in light of the rainy season. Discussions tackled on measures to prevent flooding in NCR, mitigate traffic congestion during floods and address waterborne diseases like dengue, cholera and leptospirosis.

  The upcoming Metro Manila Shake Drill on July 31 was also a major agenda item. The drill will simulate various scenarios to raise public awareness and readiness before, during and after an earthquake.

  Several other topics were tackled during the meeting, including weather updates, the impact of El Niño and initiatives like the Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal: Disaster Risk Reduction through Communication and Preparedness Systems or REINNDRROPS).   

  The council also addressed the MMDRRMC's resolution supporting the Magna Carta for DRRM Workers, along with discussions on the Gawad KALASAG Seal and Special Awards CY 2024.Resolutions were also passed to institutionalize the Post Disaster Needs Assessment Team, Regional Project Validation and Evaluation Team and Regional Project Monitoring Team in NCR.

  Updates were also provided on thematic areas, including Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response and Early Recovery and Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery.
