SHIFT TO INDIGENOUS SOURCES OF ENERGY: Sen. Win Gatchalian reiterates his support for a shift from conventional fossil fuels to indigenous sources of energy during a public hearing Thursday, July 18, 2024.
“I notice that the transition has already begun, and you can see this from the energy mix that was presented by the (Department of Energy),” Gatchalian, former chairperson of the Committee on Energy, said. According to DOE data, the use of coal is expected to go down to 9% by 2050 from its current share of 43%, with renewable energy expected to increase to 70% from 29%. Energy derived from wind will account for 21% while solar energy will account for 37%. “We need to transition, and I truly appreciate and support the transition of the DOE as reflected in their presentation,” Gatchalian added. Indigenous energy sources include geothermal, natural gas, hydro, and other renewable energy sources like solar. (Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau)
